| Has anyone ground grits (corn) with the nutrimill? Just wanted to know if I could use my nutrimill to grind the corn to make grits, because I do not have the electorlux assistant. Thanks for anyone's help. Chandra

| Hi...I have ground corn to make corn bread. I just adjust the knob to coarse rather than fine and it worked great.

Yes, I use the Nutrimill to grind corn for grits. It does quite well. Sounds like the insides of the mill are tearing up, but not really. The Nutrimill grinds coarser than the Whisper Mill(WonderMill) and the Whisper MIll sounded the same when grinding. The Whisper Mill will clog up and you have to turn off and get the grain out and start again. The Nutrimill just slows down. My family loves these grits. Haven't bought from the store in years.

What kind of corn do you use?

The yellow or white corn sold by the Becker's. Organic if they have it.

Kelly,
How do you make grits and where do you place the dial? On 12 or 2 oclock? How much do you grind and then what is the recipe for great grits? I never buy it in the store because it has preservatives in it and it is one of my husband's favorites. If I could make this I might score some big points! Thanks for your help!

When grinding the corn, I put the motor speed at slow and the grind all the way to coarse. When putting corn in the hopper, don't put too much, it will bind up. Maybe 1/2 -3/4 cup at a time.
I really don't have a recipe. Simply heat the water to boiling with the salt in it, then add grits with a whisk. That is important, you have to whisk it as you are putting the grits in because it will lump. Continue adding the grits until it thickens slightly. It will continue thickening as it cooks. Cook about 15-20 minutes. I add butter while it's cooking so we don't have to add it at the table. Also cheese on occasions. The key is whisking.

For making corn meal (corn cakes and such uses), we tried the suggestion in the Nutrimill manual and use popcorn. It comes out wonderfully - very light and sweet.
